For this project situated in a high visibility, prominent location in the heart of Eugene, we were given the opportunity to make a striking gesture while respectfully addressing the site's close proximity to the Willamette River. Rainwater from the building's roof and adjacent pedestrian walkway is carefully integrated into the design and directed in an artful manner through runnels and basins for temporary storage. The use of wetland plants helps to filter the rainwater, while maximizing the time it is kept on site. Native plants and large canopy trees are used along the perimeter beds and the irrigation system uses a "smart controller" to minimize wasted water when it is not needed. Careful coordination with the team of Architects, Engineers, and Owner’s Group ensured that no detail was overlooked as the ground plane of the exterior landscape seamlessly blends with the building forms.
