Deep Shade to Dappled Light First Place AIA-SWO People’s Choice Award, Residential Landscape Design

When a small addition required the removal of two established trees, the Frichettes lost the shady feeling to their back yard. This created an opportunity to expand their living space by creating rooms and focal points spanning their garden. An outdoor kitchen and dining patio were necessities as were places to sit and enjoy the bright annual plantings that Barbara adds every year. Respecting the trees that remained meant paying attention to the shady zones in the garden and finding the best spots for seating and appropriate plants to fit the scheme. Using materials in natural tones allowed the hardscape elements to become a backdrop for all the wonderful things the Frichettes added later; brightly painted chairs and benches, colorful pottery and whimsical touches. The Frichettes still have their Rhododendrons and big trees, but now they have so much more to enjoy throughout the year.
